Education

The late effects of childhood cancer can sometimes only become apparent years later, for example, during your studies. You might notice that you tire more quickly or that concentrating and retaining information requires more energy than before. This might lead you to adjust your study pace or perhaps choose a different program than you originally planned. At the same time, it's important to understand that this varies significantly from person to person: some young people experience ongoing challenges, while others can continue their studies with few limitations.

You are more likely to succeed in a course that you enjoy and that is within your capabilities. But sometimes you have to adjust your vision of the future. Accepting this can be difficult. It is wise to inform the school or course provider of any physical limitations or learning difficulties as soon as you enrol. This will allow the school to make certain adjustments, such as providing aids or extra time for tests and exams.

It is advised to have one permanent contact person throughout the entire programme with whom you can regularly discuss what is needed and how things are going, for example a mentor, internal supervisor or dean. All adjustments, facilities and options for financial support can be found at www.onbelemmerdstuderen.nl.

If you are unable to work part-time alongside your studies due to a medical condition, you can apply for an individual study allowance from your local council. This allowance of approximately £35 per month is intended as extra support. To be eligible, your assets must not exceed a certain amount and you must not be receiving Wajong or WIA benefits. For more information or help with the application, please contact the student counsellor of your study programme.

Are you experiencing study delays in higher education due to special circumstances, such as illness? Then you can apply for financial support from the student support fund (formerly Profileringsfonds) at your college or university. The condition is that you pay the statutory tuition fees and are (or were) entitled to student finance.
