How often you are invited to visit the LATER clinic usually varies from once a year to once every five years. This is determined by:
What type of cancer you have had
What treatments you have undergone (e.g., chemotherapy, radiation, stem cell transplant, anthracyclines, etc.)
What late effects there are (or are possible) or risks exist
Your age and how long ago your diagnosis was
LATER care is provided in accordance with the LATER guideline, which can be found here.
A visit to the LATER clinic is covered by your health insurance. This means the insurance pays the costs. If you are 18 or older, the mandatory deductible applies. This is the amount you must first pay yourself before your health insurance starts to reimburse.
Everyone 18 and older has a mandatory deductible. This is a fixed annual amount that you pay yourself for healthcare costs, before your health insurance starts paying. You can choose to increase your deductible. This is called the voluntary deductible.
If you do this:
You will pay a lower monthly premium for your health insurance
But you will pay more healthcare costs yourself if you need care
This means that when you visit the LATER clinic, you will first have to pay yourself until your (increased) deductible is used up. Only then will your health insurance reimburse the costs. A higher deductible is therefore only useful if you expect to use little healthcare. If you do use healthcare, it can actually cost more.
Not everything can be prevented, but early detection is incredibly helpful (e.g., heart medication, bone/thyroid supplementation, lifestyle advice). A healthy lifestyle (not smoking, exercise, a healthy diet) often further reduces the risk.
