Solid tumors

Within the Solid Tumors department, care and research work closely together. At the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology, healthcare professionals and researchers combine their expertise for children and adolescents with malignant tumors in organs (blastomas), connective tissue (soft tissue sarcomas), and the skeleton (bone tumors). The goal is clear: to offer every child the best possible treatment while increasing the chance of cure.

To achieve this goal, researchers translate insights from the laboratory directly into new treatments. Surgeons use innovative techniques, such as fluorescence-guided surgery and imaging with Augmented Reality. Early detection and personalized treatment also receive strong attention. Thanks to discoveries made in the laboratory, physicians can increasingly tailor treatment to the individual child.

The Solid Tumors department collaborates intensively with national and international partners to make new therapies available more quickly. For example, teams are developing PET-scans that visualize biomarkers of new treatments. In addition, researchers and physicians are working on innovative therapies, such as CAR T-cell therapy for children with high-risk neuroblastoma. The central question is always how new laboratory insights can reach the clinic as quickly as possible, with the child as the starting point.
