Spleen (Living without a spleen or with a poorly functioning spleen)

The spleen plays an important role in protecting the body against bacteria. If your child no longer has a spleen or if the spleen does not work well, they are more susceptible to certain infections. These infections can be life-threatening. Vaccinations and preventive antibiotics help reduce the risk of serious infections.

There is a brochure available that explains exactly which vaccinations are needed. It also provides information about antibiotics and what to do if your child has a fever or is bitten by a dog or cat.
