Helping and preparing your child
During treatment, your child will have many tests and procedures. A child life specialist helps your child, and you, prepare for these.
Your child sits or stands in front of an X-ray machine with an adjustable plate. Your child places their chest up against the plate and wraps their arms around it. While the X-rays are taken, your child must sit or stand very still.
Should you want to stay with your child, you are given a lead apron to wear. Otherwise you join the technician behind a glass partition where your child can still see and hear you. If you are pregnant, you must always retreat behind the glass partition while the X-rays are taken.
Another X-ray is usually taken that requires your child to stand sideways against the plate.
The X-rays take about 10 minutes.
