Moving your body before your surgery with Fit4Surgery

Fit4Surgery is a program from the Princess Máxima Center for children with bone cancer. It helps you stay fit during chemotherapy and go into surgery stronger. On this page, you will find information, workouts, and answers to frequently asked questions.

Having cancer and getting surgery can feel scary. You might feel tired or unsure. That makes sense. A lot is changing in your life. Moving your body can help: it gives you confidence and energy.

You might find it hard to move. For example, if you use crutches or if your body feels different than before. Still, this is exactly when it helps to keep moving. The Fit4Surgery program supports you with that.

What is Fit4Surgery?

Fit4Surgery is a program for children with bone cancer. In this video, Paralympic wheelchair basketball champion Bo Kramer shares her own experience. She explains what Fit4Surgery is and how the program helps you stay fit during chemotherapy and go into surgery stronger.

7-minute workout videos

With these short workouts, you can keep moving your body in a fun way. You can do them at home or in your room at the Máxima Center. Bo and Fréderique (10) show you the exercises. They have both had bone cancer. With music and a timer, you move along for seven minutes at your own pace.

Good to know

  • Can you fully put weight on your leg? Then you can do the standing workout.

  • Can you not fully put weight on your leg? Then choose the seated (chair) workout.

  • You can always choose the seated (chair) workout if that feels better for you.

Practice video: walking with crutches

Before and after your surgery, you might use crutches. In this video, Bo and Luc (16) show you how to use them safely. They have both had bone cancer. Step by step, you will learn:

  • how to choose and adjust your crutches

  • how to sit down and stand up

  • how to walk safely

  • how to go up and down the stairs

This way, you can practice with confidence.
