Anti-boredom tips

If you have to stay in the hospital for a long time, it can get quite boring. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to keep yourself entertained.

Make it cozy

  • Decorate your room the way you like. Bring posters, photos, and that teddy bear you have had since you were five, as long as it helps you feel at home.

  • Ask everyone who visits to write something in a guestbook. It is nice to read later, even when you are back home.

  • Take photos of everyone and ask them to print the pictures and bring them the next time they visit.

Stay in touch

  • Invite your friends and let people know when you would like visitors. Play a game, take photos, or just catch up. Do the things you usually do.

  • There is Wi-Fi on the ward. Send messages, call or video call friends, browse the internet, or watch a series.

  • Through M4you you can get in touch with other young people at the Máxima Center.

  • Chat with the physicians and nurses. They always have interesting stories.

  • Start a conversation. You do not have to be social all the time, but you never know who you might meet on the ward.

Relax

  • Listen to music, read a book, play a game, or watch a movie or series.

  • If you feel tired, listen to an audiobook. Close your eyes and let your thoughts wander.

  • Visit the Teen Lounge on the second floor. You can meet other young people there, relax, and play games.

  • Keep a blog or diary. Writing down your thoughts helps clear your mind. A diary can also help you notice fun or funny moments.

Be creative

  • Draw, paint, take photos, or write a poem.

  • Learn something new: knitting, sign language, or a new language. Anything you would like to try.

Move and look ahead

  • Get some fresh air. Clear your mind on your balcony or take a walk through the hospital or in the garden, but ask the nurse first if that is possible.

  • Check M4you to see which activities are organized, such as sports or creative workshops.

  • Start thinking about what you would like to do when you are back home. It is nice to have something to look forward to.
