Childhood Cancer Awareness Month 🎗️

When a child is seriously ill from cancer, only one thing matters: a cure. Right now, 1 in 4 children with cancer pass away. And the heavy treatment often has a great impact on the child's life. This must be improved. Therefore, in September we hope to raise awareness of childhood cancer.

My treatment of childhood cancer must be improved

Ryan (8) has bone cancer and is in an intensive treatment process. Chemotherapy, cisplatin, dexamethasone: these are terms that a child should not know. The treatment of childhood cancer is complex and has a major impact. Due to side effects of medication, for example. Or late effects of treatment. We cannot cure all children at this time. This must and can be improved. That is why the Princess Máxima Center does a lot of research.

Share 🎗️ against childhood cancer

At the Princess Máxima Center we treat all children with cancer in the Netherlands. We are a research hospital with only one mission: to cure every child with cancer, with optimal quality of life. We commit ourselves to this every day, by providing the best care and conducting ground-breaking research. Do you want to help achieve our mission? This can be done very easily by sharing a photo with our special Máxima filter on your Instagram. This is how we reach as many people as possible with our message this month 🧡

You can find the filter on Instagram, in our Stories (@prinsesmaximacentrum) or in our 🎗️ highlight at the top of the page. You can share the filter by clicking the 'Add Yours' button.

New perspectives

Our center is working hard on better treatments. For example, pediatric oncologist Wim Tissing has already discovered a number of ways to reduce the side effect of nausea. And Rick Admiraal is working on personalized treatments, so that medicines and chemo can be precisely tailored to each child. Aleksandra Letunovska is also conducting promising research into a new technique: a liquid biopsy, which allows you to monitor the disease in the blood without surgery.
