September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. All around the world, extra attention is asked for children with cancer. And that is much needed. Every year, about 600 children in the Netherlands still receive this diagnosis.
We want to give children with cancer not only the best treatment, but also the chance to live as normally as possible and to keep developing, despite their illness. For us, getting better means putting the interests of the child and family at the heart of everything we do. Getting better also means innovating and creating new perspectives on cure. In research, in care, in collaboration. Every single day, we give it our all.
During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Max (4), Josie (6) and Emelie (16) give us a glimpse into their world. Max wants to learn how to jump on the trampoline again, Josie wants to get better at writing, and Emelie is learning to cope with her visual impairment so she can live as normally as possible. Their stories show that getting better is about more than being cured. It is also about playing, learning, and developing yourself, despite cancer. Curious to see these children and their drawings?

For the Máxima Center getting better also means innovating and continuously working on new perspectives for cure. In research, in care, and in collaboration. Our staff contribute to this every single day. They share what they themselves want to get better at – and how their work makes a direct difference for children and families.
